BCATPR Workshop 2011

This year’s workshop will focus on the exciting theme of People-friendly technology solutions for chronic disease management.

We promise you an engaging afternoon with experts who will share their knowledge on the telehealth application industry as well as telehealth projects undertaken by local health authorities. Workshop presenters include Mr. David Pattenden, Director of Healthcare from Microsoft Canada, Ms. Loretta Zilm, Telehealth Coordinator from the Interior Health Authority, and Ms. Margarita Loyola, Manager of Telehealth from the Vancouver Island Health Authority.

David is the Nationsl Healthcare Industry lead at Microsoft Canada. David works with Canadian and Corporate resources to apply Microsoft’s global strategy, assets and capabilities to serve the needs of the Canadian market. Prior to joing Microsoft, David held a variety of positions in both Private and Public Sectors. Most recently David was Vice President of a province-wide initiative focused on enabling and implementing electronic medical records. In the Private Sector, David has held senior sales positions with several leading IT software and consulting services firms. In these roles, he gained experience by working with senior lenders in the Public Sector and Healthcare Industry across Canada. In addition, David has been a regular guest lecturer for MBA and academic programs, has worked in the Pharmaceutical Industry, and as a staff member on two Provincial election campaigns. David holds a degree in Political Science from the University of Western Ontario, a post-graduate diploma in Information Technology, and is currently working towards completing his thesis for an international M.B.A. at Warwick Business School in the U.K. David lives in Toronto with his wife and 2 children.

David’s session will explore how technilogies can be utilized to help prevent chronic illness and empower patients with chronic disease to manage their conditions. With advancements in medical devices and commodity software, it is becoming easier and more cost effective to deliver on-line and mobile applications to consumers to fulfill key telehealth scenarios. Arming patients with shared care plan, biometric devices, and on-line tools can help to extend the relationship between the patient and the provider into the home, and help track and manage illness. Drawing from international examples, this session will highlight interesting technologies and telehealth use cases covering prevention, wellness and chronic disease management.

Dr. Ehud Ur, Head, UBC Division of Endocrinology, Vancouver General Hospital & St. Paul's Hospital

New Models for Diabetes Care: Trials and Tribulations

Dr. Ehud Ur is Professor of Medicine at UBC and Head of the UBC Division of Endocrinology at Vancouver Hospital and St. Paul’s Hospital in Vancouver, BC. He is a graduate of the University of London, and trained in medicine and endocrinology at St. Bartholomew’s Hospital, London. He came to Canada in 1992 and was assistant professor of medicine at Memorial University in St. John’s, Newfoundland until May 1997. He is a board director, CDA and the Chair, (Clinical & Scientific Section), as well he sits on the board of directors of Obesity Canada.

Dr. Ur’s research interests include neuroendocrine disorders, diabetes, dyslipidemia, and obesity. He is actively engaged in both laboratory and clinical research, and has published over 150 papers, chapters and abstracts in these fields. Dr. Ur has been an investigator in clinical trials of new agents in diabetes, lipid disorders, and obesity. His laboratory is currently studying the activity of the fat regulating hormones leptin and resistin in the brain and pituitary.

Innovations in Home Telehealth Enhance Chronic Disease Management

This session is a joint presentation about the telehealth service implementation experience in VIHA and IHA. TeleHome monitoring is the use of patient managed in-home devices that capture important patient data that can be monitored by health care providers. The experiences of TeleHome Monitoring technology at both VIHA and IHA will be shared. Preliminary analysis confirms that Emergency Department visits, Hospital admissions and In-Patient length of stay can be decreased. Feedback from patients has been consistently positive and demonstrates that they are empowered and enjoy participating in the care of their disease.

Home-Based Telehealth for Chronic Disease Management: An interactive presentation of early findings

Please join us for a presentation of our early findings from the CIHR funded Home-Based Telehealth for Chronic Disease Management Knowledge Synthesis, led by Principal Investigator Dr. Sandra Jarvis-Selinger. The goal of this participatory knowledge synthesis project is to develop recommendations and findings that are directly applicable to a wide variety of users.

The workshop will begin with an introduction to the topic of telehealth for home-based chronic disease management. Other highlights will include:

o Presentation of knowledge synthesis research method

o High level findings to paint the landscape of the literature

o Preliminary synthesis of articles that have already been identified as relevant

o Roundtable discussion to solicit your feedback

Breakfast will be served from 8:00-8:30 AM and lunch will be available for all those staying to attend the afternoon BCATPR Conference in the afternoon (registration beginning at 11:30).
