The Virtual Cardiac Rehabilitation Program (vCRP) is now live and making waves in the Fraser Health Authority (FHA). We are proud to announce that the vCRP and its lead nurse, Heidi Luongo, were highlighted at the FHA Regional Business Meeting this June. The meeting, attended by all 400+ Fraser Health leadership and hosted by CEO Michael Marchbank, was a timely opportunity to introduce the vCRP, which went live this March, 2017 at Abbotsford Regional Hospital (ARH) and Jim Pattison Outpatient Care and Surgery Centre (JPOCSC). The new telehealth program fit well under the meeting’s theme of “Innovation”— the basis of the program being the use of technology to improve access to care among patients recovering from cardiovascular events.

Fraser Health Authority is one of the largest and fastest-growing health networks in Canada, providing services to the largest population of British Columbians. Thanks to a collaboration between FHA and Simon Fraser University researcher, Dr. Scott Lear, the vCRP has evolved from a research intervention to an integrated program in healthcare practice. Based on the results from the implementation research accompanying the delivery of the program in the two FHA hospitals, the hope is to expand the program across the rest of the FHA and eventually, all over British Columbia.

Funding for the implementation of this program is provided by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research (CIHR) Knowledge to Action Grant.
