What is Telehealth?

Telehealth delivers health-related services and information using sustainable and accessible telecommunications technologies.

Telehealth tools or solutions include products, systems and services that go beyond Internet-based applications. They include tools for health authorities and professionals; as well as personalized health systems for patients and citizens. All of these tools and solutions have a common function: to assist patients and their caregivers in the prevention, diagnosis, treatment, health monitoring and lifestyle management.

Examples include:

  • Health information networks
  • Electronic heath records
  • Telemedicine programs
  • Personal/wearable and portable communication systems
  • Health portals

At the BC Alliance on Telehealth Policy and Research, we believe telehealth services can help ensure all patients—regardless of where they live in BC—can access the highest quality and resources; providing a highly effective and efficient component of chronic disease care.
